The IINH collects data on landslides and associated dangers in collaboration with the Icelandic Meteorological Office, in accordance with Article 3 of Act No. 49/1997 on protective measures against landslides and avalanches. The Icelandic Avalanche and Landslide Fund (Ofanflóðasjóður) funds landslide research in Iceland.

Ongoing research and monitoring work has the objective of surveying landslides in Iceland and the distribution and characteristics of the most common types of avalanches occurring in Iceland. These are rockfalls, debris flows, earthflows, and rockslides (berghlaup).
